This is a good, medium-distance and totally doable Rajasthani rail journey and one that we recommend. Because while the desert buses are great for shorter hops, the train is where the true romance of Indian travel lives!
Whether you are finishing up a desert safari in Bikaner or just starting your Rajasthan loop, this covers everything you need to know about navigating the tracks from Bikaner to Jaipur.
Part 1: Train Options Bikaner to Jaipur
The rail connection between Bikaner and Jaipur is robust, with several trains running daily.
Popular Train Choices
Connecting the Red City of Bikaner to the Pink City of Jaipur is another of the quintessential rail journeys in Rajasthan.
There are several regular and daily trains from Bikaner to Jaipur:
- Bikaner–Jaipur Intercity Express: This is the most popular choice for travellers. It usually departs Bikaner in the early morning (around 5:00 AM or 6:00 AM) and gets you into Jaipur by noon. It’s fast, relatively clean, and avoids the overnight hassle.
- Leelan Express: A reliable daily service that connects the two cities. It offers a range of classes and is a favourite for those who prefer a mid-day departure.
- Bikaner–Puri Express: If you are looking for an overnight option to save on a night’s accommodation, there are long-distance trains passing through Bikaner that reach Jaipur in the early hours of the morning.

Frequency
There are at least 4 to 6 direct trains daily from Bikaner to Jaipur.
Because this is a major transit route for locals and traders, trains are frequent, but they do fill up—especially during the festival seasons or the winter peak months (November to February).
How Long is the Train Bikaner to Jaipur?
The distance is roughly 380 kilometres, and the journey typically takes between 6 to 7.5 hours.
Part 2: Understanding Train Classes in India
If you’ve never booked a train in India, the class system can feel like a puzzle.
There are a lot of different classes. Though the trains Bikaner to Jaipur don’t run with all of the options of class.
Here is a breakdown of what to expect on this route:
- AC 2-Tier (2A): This is the “comfort” choice. You get a bunk with curtains for privacy, clean sheets, a pillow, and a blanket. There are only four bunks per compartment, making it quieter and more spacious.
- AC 3-Tier (3A): A popular choice for budget travellers. It’s similar to 2-Tier but with six bunks per compartment and no privacy curtains. It’s air-conditioned and comfortable, though it can feel a bit crowded during the day.
- Sleeper Class (SL): This is the authentic experience. There is no air conditioning, and the windows stay open (with bars). It can be very dusty and loud, but it’s the best way to see the landscape and chat with local families. Note: Not recommended for the height of summer!

Part 3: How to Book Your Tickets
Booking Indian train tickets is much easier for international travellers than it used to be, but you still need a plan.
- Online: Use 12GoAsia or RedBus. These platforms accept international credit cards and provide a much smoother interface than the official government site.
- The Official Site (IRCTC): If you have an Indian SIM card and a lot of patience, you can book directly through the IRCTC website.
- At the Station: Bikaner Junction has a Reservation Counter. You can show up and fill out a paper form, but be prepared for queues. If you are a foreigner, ask for the Foreign Tourist Quota—it’s a set of seats held back specifically for international visitors, often available even when the train is sold out.
- Travel Agents: Most guesthouses in India can book tickets for you for a small commission. It’s often worth the $2–$3 fee to avoid the stress – but ask in advance!

Part 4: The Journey – What to Expect
The Bikaner Station (BKN) is well-organised. Aim to arrive 30 minutes before your departure.
Look for the electronic boards that list the “Coach Position”—or download the app to get a handle on this before you travel by train. Indian trains are incredibly long, and you don’t want to be sprinting half a mile with your backpack when the train pulls in!
Believe me; we’ve done that more than once while learning our way around the Indian rail system!

On Board Bikaner to Jaipur
Once you’re on board, settle in. If you are in an AC carriage, an attendant will usually bring around bedding.
If you’re hungry, don’t worry. Vendors move through the aisles constantly selling:
- Chai: Served in small cups, sweet and piping hot.
- Samosas and Pakoras: Freshly fried at the larger station stops.
- Noodles: Two-minute noodles taste even better on a train in India!
- Tomato Soup: A weirdly delicious Indian Rail staple served with breadsticks.
The landscape between Bikaner to Jaipur is a beautiful transition. You’ll leave the deep sands of the Thar and move into the more rugged, hilly terrain of the Aravalli Range as you approach the Pink City.

Part 5: Bikaner – The Red City Highlights
Before you hop on that train, make sure you’ve given Bikaner the time it deserves. It’s often overlooked, but it’s one of the most authentic spots in Rajasthan.
Top Things to Do in Bikaner:
- Junagarh Fort: One of the few forts in India not on a hill, but its interiors are arguably the most beautiful in the state.
- Karni Mata (Rat Temple): Located in Deshnoke, it’s home to thousands of holy rats. It’s a 30-minute drive from the city and a must-see for the (extremely) adventurous.
- The Old City Walk: Wander through the narrow lanes to see the Rampuria Havelis—red sandstone merchant houses with carvings so intricate they look like lace.
- Camel Research Centre: Visit in the late afternoon to see hundreds of camels returning from the desert and try some camel milk ice cream.

Accommodation In Bikaner
We stayed at The Prince Haveli in Bikaner.
The Haveli has been lovingly restored and is located right in the centre of the old city. Owner Atik and his staff are very gracious hosts.
It is a basic accommodation, but the rooms are comfortable, and it is an affordable way to experience a traditional Haveli in Bikaner.
Other Places to Stay in Bikaner:
- Narendra Bhawan: A luxury splurge in the residence of the last Maharaja.
- Bhanwar Niwas: A stunning heritage haveli in the old city.

Part 6: Jaipur – The Pink City Highlights
Arriving in Jaipur is a sensory explosion. It’s bigger, faster, and louder than Bikaner, and it’s packed with history.
Top Things to Do in Jaipur:
- Amer Fort: The crown jewel. Ride a jeep up to the gates and explore the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace).
- Hawa Mahal: The Palace of Winds. The iconic pink honeycomb facade is brilliant from the Tattoo Cafe across the street at sunset.

- Shopping: Jaipur is the gem and textile capital of India. Head to Johari Bazaar for jewellery and Bapu Bazaar for textiles.
Accommodation in Jaipur
We always stay at Jaipur Haveli.
This 200-year-old traditional home has been in the same family for five generations. The architecture is stunning—think intricate carvings and peaceful courtyards—but it’s the hospitality that keeps us coming back.
With three generations currently living on-site, it feels less like a hotel and more like a warm, welcoming home. Plus, their home-cooked meals are some of the best in the city!

Other Places to Stay in Jaipur:
- The Pearl Palace: Consistently rated as one of the best mid-range hotels in India. Their rooftop restaurant, Peacock Rooftop, is legendary.
- Dera Mandawa: A beautiful family-run heritage boutique hotel for a more personal touch.
- ITC Rajputana: If you want full-scale royal luxury and a world-class spa.
Part 7: Final Tips for a Smooth Trip
As with all travel in India, a little bit of planning makes for a slightly smoother journey. The train Bikaner to Jaipur is no exception!
- Keep Your Bags Locked: Use a simple cable lock to secure your luggage to the metal loop under the seat. It gives you peace of mind if you want to sleep or head to the bathroom.
- Download “Where is My Train”: This app is a lifesaver. It uses GPS to tell you exactly where your train is, even if you don’t have internet, so you’ll know exactly how far you are from Jaipur.
- Don’t Forget the Snacks: While food is available on the train, Bikaner is the snack capital of India! Buy a bag of Bikaneri Bhujia before you board—it’s the world’s best train snack.
- Arrival Rickshaws: Jaipur Junction (JP) is chaotic. Use the Pre-paid Taxi/Rickshaw Booth outside the station to avoid haggling. It’s a fixed price and much safer for newcomers.
